I’ll be honest; I had no idea how to start this post. Not a
clue. And really, that’s an accurate way to describe this whole blogging
endeavor. It took me a month to come up with the name and it isn’t like No BS
Book Reviews is any sort of masterpiece. Nothing wrong with it either. I like
it. Describes what I want to do with the blog, it’s honest and distinctly
non-poetic. Robert Frost wouldn’t ever be so forthright, would he? Regardless,
I do have a plan now and you deserve to know what you get for staying around.
My goal
here is simple. First off, I want to provide reviews that aren’t BS. Too many
times I’ve seen people skip over the problems a book has or ignore the book
altogether and just say “I liked it.” Well, guess what? That information helps
no one. I want to supply people with reviews that actually say something,
without falling off the deep end and becoming bone dry. Whether I succeed or
not is for you to decide, of course.
Second,
I simply enjoy writing and reading. Doing these reviews gives me a chance to
combine two hobbies while creating something useful. For me it was only
natural. Helps that I’ve been known to be slightly opinionated.
I’m
hoping to release reviews every other Thursday with the possibility that
sometimes I may release one on the Thursday of an off week. Ultimately, I have
to figure out how often I can reliably write these. It goes without saying that
I hope to release more often than less.
At some
point, I am considering producing other book-related content, besides reviews.
What that will be, or when it will be, I haven’t a clue. Maybe something that
is slightly more interactive? Guess that just means you’ll have to stick
around! (Please? Pretty please?)
Hopefully
you know what’s up now. If not, oops.
Hope to be "seeing" you again!
Yeah, I'd DEFINITELY want to follow your blog. Waaaay too many bloggers just write gushing review after gushing review. It's great that they can love every single book they pick up, but it doesn't make for very reliable book opinions for the more critical reader like myself.
ReplyDeleteI know starting a blog is a daunting task, and getting it seen by other people is nearly impossible, but it gets easier and becomes more natural over time. I'm not the most blog-savvy blogger, but if you have any questions I can answer I'd be happy to help!
As far as non-review posts, there are weekly memes for book bloggers. I'd advise against weighing you blog down with four or five a week (believe me, I've seen it done), but one or two would be a great way to engage your readers and show off your blog. The weekly meme I participate in and would recommend is Top Ten Tuesday, which you can find out all about here.
Good luck!

It's not just those that like every single book they ever touch, it's those that don't explain themselves and refuse to delve into the book. Telling me whether you liked it or not isn't helpful to me; I need to know why the book is bad. If a review is only 200 hundred words, then you are either the world's best writer, or you need to take a good hard look at what you just wrote.
DeleteThe nice thing at this point of blogging is that each time someone follows, or comments, it is great. Can't wait to actually grow a fan base though. Hard to not fall into the trap of just spamming myself everywhere. The temptation is strong to do it.
I actually just stumbled upon that meme earlier today. Definitely considering it, relies on me being able to add more depth to it than just a list. Shouldn't be to hard to do that, I tend to have lots of feelings about almost everything.
Thanks for taking the time to comment!

I saw a recent update of your blog on GR and decided to have a look. I do agree with your point here. Giving the whats and whys when reviewing a book is my aim as well. I see you don't have lots of posts, but one of my strongest beliefs it's that a blog is (or should be) all about quality, not about writing a hundred reviews a month. Following you now. Good luck!
